The All Progressive Congress (APC) Plateau State Chapter has clarified the conduct of its party primaries for the forthcoming local government elections. In a press statement issued on August 10, 2024, the party announced that the primaries will take place on Monday, August 12, 2024, across the state.
The APC State Executive Council met to finalize arrangements for the primaries, focusing on guidelines issued by the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASEIC). According to the guidelines, chairmanship candidates will be elected by 5 ad-hoc delegates, including a woman, through a mini-congress. Councillorship candidates will be elected by mini-congress through direct primaries, comprising present and former elected representatives from the state wards who are APC members.
The guidelines outline the composition of the mini-congress, including national, state, zonal, LGA, and ward executives, as well as present and former executive council chairmen, elected councillors, House of Assembly members, and national assembly members from the state ward.
Voting at the mini-congress will be by direct primaries for councillorship candidates, requiring delegates to produce their APC membership cards. Chairmanship elections will be conducted by secret ballot, with the aspirant having the highest number of votes declared the winner.
State Chairman Hon. Rufus Bature appealed to party members to respect the PLASEIC guidelines and conduct themselves orderly for a successful exercise.
