The Kaduna State Government has launched the second generation Kaduna Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) and Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS). This milestone event was held at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Hall, marking a significant step towards promoting gender equality and empowering women in the state.
The launch was attended by dignitaries, including the Women Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms. Beatrice Eyongun, and the UN Women Deputy Representative, Dr. Nesreen Elmolla.
In her goodwill message, Dr. Elmolla expressed her deep sense of fulfillment, acknowledging the collaborative efforts of the Kaduna State Government, UN Women, and other stakeholders.
The Kaduna State Action Plan is aligned with the United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) 1325 and 2250, which emphasize the importance of women’s participation in peace and security processes.
The plan aims to strengthen mechanisms for the full implementation, monitoring, and reporting of policy documents, as well as promote women’s economic empowerment and participation in decision-making processes.
The UN Women’s Country Office, led by Mr. Peter Mancha, has been instrumental in supporting the development of the action plan. The organization has also facilitated legislative retreats for lawmakers and collaborated with the Kaduna State Peace Commission to develop a gender-responsive strategic action plan.
The launch of the second generation Kaduna Action Plan marks a significant step towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Partnership Framework goals and objectives.
As emphasized by the UN Bodies, much work still lies ahead, and it is essential to address emerging threats to women and youth’s peace and security issues, including insurgency, climate change, and displacement.
