The National Sports Commission (NSC) Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, has challenged the Nigerian Aquatic Federation to organize a nationwide swimming competition for young athletes within the next two months. This directive follows the successful conclusion of the inaugural "Swim to Future Championship," a grassroots tournament for primary and secondary school children aged 6-14, held in Abuja from February 28 to March 1.
Hon. Olopade, speaking after the "Swim to Future Championship," praised the federation's efforts in nurturing young talent. He emphasized the importance of early engagement in sports, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's vision for sports development, as championed by NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko.
"This tournament perfectly reflects the mandate given to us by Mr. President," Hon. Olopade stated. "Our focus is on engaging young people at this crucial stage, guiding them towards professional sports, and enabling them to build fulfilling careers based on their natural abilities."
He further stressed the necessity of strategic investments in infrastructure and funding to support these budding swimmers, ensuring they receive the necessary training and exposure from an early age.
"We are committed to action, not just words. That is why I have tasked the federation's president and secretary to organize a national competition within the next two months. This will provide a platform for us to identify and develop young talents capable of representing Nigeria on the international stage," Hon. Olopade added.
The "Swim to Future Championship" witnessed enthusiastic participation from young swimmers across the region, highlighting the potential for swimming development at the grassroots level in Nigeria. The NSC's call for a national tournament signals a determined effort to capitalize on this momentum and propel Nigerian swimming toward greater achievements.
The NSC aims to use the planned national event to scout for the best young swimmers and begin to place them on development programs that will hopefully result in future international competitors.
